I was pretty excited about getting into Buckeye metallers Skeletonwitch as soon as I saw the cover art for their upcoming record Breathing the Fire. And, hell, can ya blame me??? Look at this shit! The thing's got some kind of shrouded skeleton zombie with flames shootin' out his mouth and beastly antlers sproutin' out his head! Fucking awesome, right? Fucking metal! So that's why I'm a little bummed out by how underwhelmed I am by "Crushed Beyond Dust," the record's lead-off single. Sure, I like the Chris Barnesy growlin' over the chunky thrash riffin', but this tune doesn't make me wanna pump the devil horns or punch in my neighbor's windpipe. Not sure what it is that ain't doing it for me. Maybe it's just the low-quality MySpace stream, but more likely it's the groove-less drumming and unmemorable songwriting! I'm still up for giving these guys a chance, so do me a favor, check out the even lower-quality YouTube rip of the song, and let me know what I'm missing.
