The Duty's Top Ten Metallica Songs

Yesterday Duty hero Early Mike posted his ten favorite Metallica songs on his faboulous blog Whiplash. Being the fanboy I am I had to post a response. First up here is Mike's list:

10. Dyer's Eve - Lyrically my favorite Metallica song.
9. Fight Fire With Fire - The most genius verse vocal pattern ever of all time.
8. Seek and Destroy - How can the opening riff to a song possibly be this strong????
7. Whiplash - Best song to hear when wasted at a bar EVER. I will kill you.
6. For Whom The Bell Tolls - This jam proves its not always about speed. Very important.
5. The Thing That Should Not Be - Pure evil on every level.
4. Shortest Straw - Chorus vocal pattern with backing vocals (shortest straaaaaaw!) un-fuck-withable.
3. Master Of Puppets - It's overexposed but still every time I hear it I want to punch babies.
2. Ride The Lightning - As far a straight riffing goes, the ones in this jam are my faves.
1. The Four Horsemen - The guitar break at the 2 minute mark is why I started playing.
And now mine:

10. No Remorse - Always wanted to do a stoner-rock version of this one.
9. All Nightmare Long - 'Bout time they wrote another song that sounds evil.
8. My Friend Of Misery - Cowbell on the chorus. 'Nuff said.
7. Fight Fire With Fire - Fastest riff of all time.
6. The Outlaw Torn - I love the jam outro. Epic shit.
5. Wherever I May Roam - The first 'Tallica song I got into. Still kills live.
4. Dyer's Eve - Brutal thrash at its best.
3. For Whom The Bell Tolls - My favorite song to play on the drums.
2. Damage Inc. - Fuck it all and fuckin' no regrets.
1. Blackened - When they rip into the intro riff with half-time drums after the solo it is the finest metal moment of all time.

So how about you guys? Lets hear from you in the comments.

I'm hot for Metallica.

Not only one of the first bands I fell for that can be considered Metal, but I'm fresh off of a serious Guitar Hero: Metallica bender, and I wanna rub Kirk Hammett on my gums.

10. All Nightmare Long - Fan-fucking-tastic return to form for team Metallica.
9. Broken, Beat, & Scarred - What don't kill ya make ya more strong? I'm in.
8. Frayed Ends of Sanity - Hear them calling?
7. Orion - By the end of this one, you're no longer certain which dimension you exist in.
6. For Whom The Bell Tolls - You can't beat that intro for dread, atmosphere, and guitar tone.
5. The Thing That Should Not Be - Just fucking terrifying uncertainty and outstanding songwriting.
4. Fight Fire With Fire - Fast, pummeling, and classic.
3. Fade To Black - EPIC.
2. Battery - The perfect way to jump-start Master of Puppets. This song has balls to spare.
1. Creeping Death - So let it be written.

So there it is- that wasn't as hard as I thought. Maybe I need to deliberate a bit more, but this is my immediate reaction.

No Black album? Guess not. I'll take Ride the Lightning anyday. You motherfuckers should come over and pretend to pummel these songs into the ground.

You bring the PBRs, I'll bring the fake plastic drums.

Orion keeps coming up on shuffle now... like every day.

Proof that my iPod loves me.

OK Here it is after too much or not enogh debate:
10)FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS- Not only the first on my list, but also the first Metallica tune ever to enter my ear canals. Wow.
9)THE STRUGGLE WITHIN- I had trouble staying with the BLACK ALbum but this Thrash laden tune keeps me thowing it in.
8)THE FOUR HORSEMEN- I admit it is very "verse-c-verse" but it really shows its true power riffy and lyrically.
7)ALL NIGHTMARE LONG- Just an insane song with excellent guitar and vocal hooks. Also THE funnest song to play on GH Met.
6)ONE- A nice upbeat piece for the first 12 seconds then," landmines are taking my sight, taking my speech, taking my hearing" Fuckn best solo and ending ever.
5)ORION- the hands down best instramental-soundscape-y tune in their aresenal!
4)BLACKENED- no more can be said about the pure awesomeness of this tune...Darkest Color, Blistered Earth...
3)RIDE THE LIGHTNING-Just an all out killer rifftastic tune about the death penalty.
2)BREADFAN-I know, I know, it is a Budgie tune, but c'mon!
1)CREEPING DEATH - The best tune to confuse church goers with.Bible riffs rock!

In no particular order (and also off the top of my head):

--"The Thing That Should Not Be" (I honestly think Mastodon would not exist as a band if not for this song, for some obscure reason)
--"Some Kind Of Monster" (yes, I do like St. Anger, and yes I think this song is heavy--if disjointed--as fuck that is probably just me)
--"Seek & Destroy" (to me, the tightest song on Kill 'Em All, but malleable enough to really stretch out live)
--"Blackened" (Justice was my first album of theirs, this was my first song of theirs, 'nuff said.)
--"Sad But True" (of all their Black Album hits, this is the only one I never have gotten tired of at some point)
--"-Human" (I will always wonder what they would've done with this in the studio, without the strings)
--"Cure" (I really think Jason makes this song, and the most convincing example of the "bad-ass boogie" they were trying for back then)
--"For Whom The Bell Tolls" (the spartan power of the riff here is too much to be denied or ignored)
--"Battery" (That opening transition is just too badass to be denied)
--"Harvester Of Sorrow" (what "I Am The Law" wishes it could be when it grows up)

Bonus cover tune: "Free Speech For The Dumb"
