We're Willing To Make Love To Concrete

To celebrate Heavy Duty's 100th post, we present our top ten albums of all time, as of September 2006. Coming in at #1 is Faith No More's "Angel Dust."

A regular theme of the Heavy Duty is the how the soundtrack of youth dominates the rest of your music lovin' life. You might pick up new bands/albums over the years, but the first bands you get into are the everlasting ones. Ask any music fan from any era and they will tell you the best music was made when they were 12-18 years old. Then it all got shitty and rockandrollisdead and all that bullshit. We've come close to saying such things, but then Mastodon and Lamb Of God came are around and we kinda feel young again. But as much as we dig that new stuff, nothing will match the our first musical discoveries.

"Angel Dust" is our favorite album of all time. And to be honest, it's not even close. We were a little late to the FNM party, getting a dubbed cassette! copy of "The Real Thing" from our bro Beta0 in fall of '92. But once we jumped on board, they became our second favorite band, a title they still hold today.

The thing that makes "Angel Dust" so good is its stunning diversity and unpredictability from track to track. Every song sounds different from the next, shifting from pseudo-death metal to waltz to power pop to movie themes, all of it in FNM style. A great album will cover enough emotional ground that it can be enjoyed no matter how the listener is feeling. This is that album for us. It's all here. No record has ever sounded like this and hopefully never will. Also any album that makes us try to play air guitar/drums/bass/keyboards all at the same time has something going for it.

Picking a tune of this record was tough, we could choose any of them and be happy 'bout it. "A Small Victory" will work, mainly 'cause we like this clip a lot. That's the MTV we grew up with, FNM performing live for all us little metal heads. Today's equivalent would be Dillinger Escape Plan destroying TRL, which would never happen. Thank god for the YouTube for all our music needs. (crosses all fingers and toes.)

So there ya go folks, our top ten off all time. Man, did that take a lot out of us. Give us minute, we need to catch our breath. Woooh, there we go. Anyone wanna get a grape drink and/or know any good penguin jokes?

for my 11th birthday i received LL Cool J's "Radio" and Faith No More's "Real Thing." Who knew the latter would have such an impact?

While I commend your number one pick, I can not do so for your overall list. I'm sorry, but a top ten list without a Tool album in sight is just not...well, American.

Agreed, No TOOL? Can you say La-Ter-al-Us.

"Aenima" is in my "almost" top-ten. Jesus, tough crowd. At least Tool at the Santa Barbara Bowl is my #1 concert of all time.
